After a night of pain and glory that saw Portugal stun hosts France to be crowned European champions, their captain and talisman Cristiano Ronaldo is understandably in a charitable mood.
Ronaldo, 31, was in tears when he handed the captain’s armband to his assistant Nani following an injury in the first-half, and he watched agonizingly from the sidelines until Eder’s extra-time intervention took out the lights in Paris and sent the Portuguese into raptures.
The Real Madrid star also finished second in the race for the top-scorer honour behind France forward, Antoine Griezmann. But clearly, as second-best isn’t really his thing, moments after the game, he handed something over: his silver boot award.
New Valencia signing Nani took to social media after the insane victory celebrations had died down to express his delight at Ronaldo giving him the award as a “gift”.
He wrote: “More than a captain you’re a champion! Thanks for the gift! Let’s go Portugal we are the Champions!”
And he might just as well hand out the silver boot, given that his trophy cabinet could probably do with the extra space as he’s now odds-on favourite to win the 2016 Ballon d’Or!
The fans however, have looked askance at Ronaldo’s bit of “generosity”, with some claiming he gave out the award because it was silver, not golden boot. There are even speculations that he gave the silver boot out because it was made by Adidas (Ronaldo is contracted to Nike).
Others were simply full of praise for their idol. See a sample of reactions below.
